So, how can you encourage your kids to stay ahead of gear problems, and why is it so important? Beyond preventing common gear problems like damaged bindings or rusted components, sharing common sense ideas with your children prevents everything from musty smells and wet attire to poor goggle visibility and an array of other dangerous mountain accidents.

Easy-to-Implement Snow Attire Care
Whether you’re heading back home or the hotel after a day of skiing and riding, designate a well-ventilated area for wet and icy clothes to dry. Teaching your kids basic clothing care habits like hanging up their items instead of making a pile is simple and effective. Before hanging any items, be sure to shake off any snow/ice and wring out or towel off as much moisture as you can.
If you plan on drying items by the fire in the lodge, be sure to show your kids a safe drying distance from the flames and embers. Practice extra caution with heat-sensitive materials like polyester and other synthetics that can quickly melt, deform, or catch fire when exposed to high temperatures. While you don’t have to worry as much with flame-retardant materials like wool, it’s always better to maintain a safe drying distance, regardless of material type.
Goggle Care is Essential
For snow goggles, sunglasses, and helmet visors, be sure to show your children how to use a lens-safe microfiber cloth. With a gentle and circular motion, gradually wipe across the entirety of the lens to clear any accumulated droplets or fog. Never use a rough towel or a jacket sleeve to clean the sensitive goggle layer; a fabric that’s too abrasive can permanently damage the anti-fog and anti-glare coatings.

Keep Bindings & Boots Safe & Dry
Accumulating ice, loose-fitting screws, and improper use can lead to expensive and dangerous boot/binding situations. Before heading out to the mountain, teach your children how to clear ice from the bindings and properly buckle their boots.
