Advanced Gear for Disc Golf Pros: Exploring Niche Equipment

On the path to aces, birdies, and incredible par saves from OB, the right gear selection makes all the difference. Whether you’re a casual or competitive player, there’s a lot to consider as you explore what will work best for your throwing style, the courses you frequent, and the progression goals you have as a player.

Ultimately, the best disc golf accessories and discs vary significantly from one disc golfer to the next. There is a ton of variety, and building a compatible gear foundation depends on your skill level and the types of courses you like to play.

Building a Balanced Disc Collection: Mix & Match Your Power, Glide, Turn, & Fade Ratings

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or an absolute beginner, our versatile collection of pro discs at the Ski Bum features something for every skill level and course condition. A balanced bag should feature a diverse profile of discs that cover the spectrum of shot shapes, distances, and variable weather conditions.

Here’s a basic overview of some important factors related to proper disc selection:

  • Stability: How a disc behaves in flight related to its turn and fade ratings.
    • A disc with higher stability, also called an overstable disc, resists turning over to the right and fades strongly to the left throughout the flight path.
    • A stable disc with moderate turn and fade will hold its angle, flying straighter for longer when thrown flat.
    • An understable disc is more likely to “turn over” to the right and fades less at the end of its flight path.
    • In general, discs with less stability are considered easier to throw since less power is required to achieve the intended flight path for that disc. For example, a fairway driver with a 6 or 7 power rating and a stable/understandable turn and fade rating requires less force to throw correctly. Alternatively, overstable discs with higher turn and fade ratings require significantly more throwing power to achieve the intended flight path.
  • Drivers, Mid Ranges, & Putters:
    • Within each subcategory of disc, the first number indicating power will determine a disc’s classification. The higher the power rating, the more distance that disc can achieve when thrown at the correct speed. While many beginners are tempted to start with a maximum distance driver, most new players cannot generate enough force to achieve the correct flight path for the higher disc ratings.
    • Until you have mastered disc grip, x-step, correct release technique, and consistent follow-through, we encourage you to start with slower drivers and stable/understable discs. As your skills progress, you can work towards higher power ratings and rising stability to accommodate your evolving abilities.
    • Choosing a mix of drivers, mid-ranges, and putters is essential regardless of skill level. You want a balanced range that covers all possible angles and stability needs. For example, an overstable fairway driver, mid-range, and putter that is resistant to turning over will help you maintain a more consistent flight path when fighting through the wind. Alternatively, for calmer days when you want maximum distance, stable discs can be used for curving anhyzer flex shots, while your understable drivers and mid ranges will enable you to throw laser-straight hyzer-flip shots that fly faster and farther.

Upgrade Your Disc Bag & Improve Your Shoe Selection

Only second to disc selection, your disc and shoe selection sets the tone for your entire round. For shoes, focus on arch comfort, a grippy tread profile, and weatherproofing features to protect against soggy and muddy conditions. With an appropriate disc bag, it's easy to remain organized and grab the exact plastic you need in a moment. The best disc bags also come with back padding, drink pouches, and other must-have features to improve comfort and convenience on the course.
