As the fresh powder melts into slush, you’re not alone if you find yourself longing for a few more laps! As year-round skiers and boarders, we’re painfully aware of how summertime activities like mountain biking, kayaking, and hiking just don’t cut it and have selected some of our top warm-weather ski spots to keep those summertime blues away. The snow is still fresh in a variety of mountain ranges come June and July, and can provide some of the most enjoyable ridings if you prefer softer snow and want to avoid the sub-zero temps and overpriced wintertime lift tickets.
Even without booking a trip to a European glacier like Hintertux, you can still enjoy several spring and summertime locations throughout the US. From Oregon to Colorado, here are three of our favorite destinations for warmer-weather ski vacations worth remembering.
Timberline Pairs Scenic Beauty With an Amazing Snowpack
If an idyllic adventure into the Wild West sounds like a memorable experience, prepare to have your expectations exceeded at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon. Thanks to Timberline’s higher altitude and coastal positioning, the area receives significantly more snowpack each year; Timberline is the only US resort that boasts year-round skiing. While the majority of the skiable terrain has melted by May, they operate a high-speed quad lift that ascends over 7,000 for cruising atop the Palmer Ice Field.
If you’re like us and refuse to store the gear come spring and summer, this resort offers a perfect balance for all skill levels. You’ll find a generous mix of beginner-friendly greens, as well as steeper terrain suitable for every adrenaline junkie. Since it’s colder in higher-elevation resorts, prepare with higher-weatherproof-rating coats and invest in a better pair of ski goggles online since this area receives more sun than your average resort.
Mammoth Mountain in California
Expansive vistas meet longer-run ski conditions in this unforgettable ski destination. If you love wide-open cruisers, family-friendly amenities, and a ton of beautiful tree skiing, you’ll never forget a trip to this iconic destination. While the spring and summer conditions are highly variable depending on the year’s weather conditions, Mammoth Mountain is one of the few resorts that offer skiing and riding into June, July, and sometimes August. As one of the sunniest and most exposed resorts in the country, don’t forget to bring your sunblock, dark goggles, and upgrade to a coat with wind-blocking technology before you go!
Arapahoe Basin in Colorado Offers the Steepest of Terrain
If you’ve mastered your edgework and are looking for upper-class amenities, A-Basin belongs on your bucket list for the best spring and summertime skiing. Nestled within the Rockies and shielded from the majority of warmer-weather systems, A-Basin offers skiing well into June (and sometimes even July) when the snowpack holds. Since this is another high-altitude resort, check out our ski and snowboard outlet before you go and find everything you need to stay warm amidst the steepest and deepest of conditions.
